Helmets for Riding UTVs Article from Maxey's MotorsportsWhen it comes to riding UTVs, it is easy to get lulled into a false sense of security. After all, a side by side feels very similar to riding in a car. You climb into the roll cage which resembles a car frame. You buckle in a seat belt. You use the same style of steering. But there’s a key difference: UTVs offer much less protection.

As you ride, you could encounter a number of safety issues. It’s easy to smack your head on the sturdy interior. A rock or other debris could hit your face. You could crash and fall out of the vehicle. You need more protection, which is where helmets come into play.

We created a guide to finding the right helmet for your riding lifestyle below. For all your side by side needs, visit Maxey's Motorsports. We proudly serve those in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma. We offer a wide selection of many brands including RZR®.

Helmet Types

Specialty UTV helmets do exist. They provide tailored features like extra ventilation for riding under the sun or mouthguards for improved protection. But these options tend to be more expensive and harder to find. An all-purpose powersports helmet will work just fine.

There are a few types of helmets available. You’ll want to avoid half helmets and open face ones. They just won’t give you the protection you need in the event of a crash. A full-face helmet is the way to go.

Many side by side riders opt for motocross helmets. They provide the full face protection you need. But their are made from material designed to be lightweight, which offers great comfort on those long rides on hot summer days. They are built for intense outdoor rides, making them a great fit for UTV owners.

Crash Test Ratings

As you shop for helmets, you may notice crash test ratings. These come from tests designed to measure how the helmet performs in a mock accident situation. The ratings come from government agencies (like the Department of Transportation) or nonprofits (like Snell). Make sure any helmet you want to buy received favorable crash test ratings.

Finding a Good Fit

The most important part of buying a helmet is ensuring a good fit. You’re better off wearing a cheaper well-fitting helmet than an expensive one that doesn’t fit right. The fit is what gives you the protection in a crash. It also makes sure the helmet is comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Start with figuring out your sizes. Your head size will affect what helmet size you need. Your head shape will affect how your jaw gets protected. Find charts for both online.

Once you find a few possible options, run some tests to find a well-fitting option. Move your head from side to side. It should not wobble or wiggle at all. Roll your head forward. If it slides down, put it down. Wear it for several minutes. If it causes soreness or leaves red spots, it doesn’t fit right.

A helmet should be snug on your head. Even as it gets worn out, it should never become loose or wiggly. There should be some pressure as you wear it, but not enough that it causes discomfort.
