History

The roots of Polaris dates back to 1945. Brothers Edgar and Allan Hetteen, along with their close friend David Johnson, created Hetteen Hoist & Derrick Shop which primarily worked on repairing farm equipment. However, they took their first, significant step toward the company we know today when they created the first snowmobile. Because of restrictions on mechanical parts due to the war, the sled was made from a conglomerate of farm equipment parts, including a grain silo conveyor belt for a track and an old Chevy bumper for skis.

 

The machine was ready to run by 1955--at which time the founders had officially adopted the name Polaris--and they decided to put the machine to the test. Though it was initially made to make hunting trips easier, the founders took the machine on a 1200 mile journey through Alaska. Even hauling 900 pounds of gear and traveling in -40 degree weather, it took only twelve days to complete the trip. Polaris was officially a name to be reckoned with.

 

Over the next several decades, they expanded their operation to include even more powersports vehicles. In the 1980s, they started selling the first American-made ATV and twenty years later, in 2009, they unveiled their On-Road Vehicle Division that started making the first Polaris motorcycles. And that’s not all. Polaris manufacturers a number of powersport vehicles for both commercial consumption and professional and government workers, making them one of the most trusted and popular American powersports manufacturers.
