Scooters (also called mopeds) are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to commute. Their compact size makes them easy to handle and fit into a narrow parking space. However, there are many important safety tips that scooter owners need to know in order to avoid potential hazards, and that’s why the experts at Maxey’s Motorsports have created this scooter safety guide.

Safety Hazards

Scooters are similar to motorcycles in many respects, but they tend to be smaller and a bit slower overall. As a result, mopeds tend to be used on residential or back roads rather than freeways. While these kinds of roads tend to see less traffic and slower speeds, they can also create a false sense of security in both you and other motorists. A smaller vehicle makes you less visible to other drivers, and scooters tend to have smaller wheels, meaning that any bumps or potholes you hit will feel that much worse.

Riding Defensively

While you should usually give people the benefit of the doubt, when it comes to riding a moped it’s usually best to act under the assumption that other drivers are being inattentive or unsafe. Your smaller size and engine power make you vulnerable. Keep yourself visible, give other motorists plenty of space, and try to keep your movements predictable. You should also keep your eyes out for any potential road hazards.

Gear Up

Wearing the right safety gear is also important. Go for durable clothing that fully covers your body. A solid, well-fitting helmet is also important. Riding boots and a jacket will round out your ensemble. You can also add reflective strips to your moped or clothing to help make yourself more visible.

Check the Forecast

Always check the weather forecast before setting out. Even if things look fine now, they might get bad on your return trip. Keep in mind that since scooters have open-air seats, you are that much more vulnerable to the weather. Precipitation in particular can make things more dangerous because of the reduced visibility and slick roads.
