A Brief History of Honda®

The company that became Honda began in 1946, right after the end of World War II, in Hamamatsu, a city in the Shizuoka prefecture of Japan. Founder Soichiro Honda had initially started a parts manufacturing company in the 1930s, but it failed to take off, so after the war, he decided to refocus his efforts.

Honda incorporated the Honda Motor Company in 1949 to build high-quality automobiles for both the domestic and international markets. His partner in designing these vehicles was Takeo Fujisawa, whose marketing expertise and business experience perfectly complimented Soichiro Honda’s technical acumen.

The first Honda motorcycle, a precursor to their eventual rise in the powersports industry, was the D-Type (D standing for “Dream”), introduced to the Japanese market in 1949. By 1964, the Honda Motor Company had become the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles and they have maintained this title to the present day, thanks to the diversity of their product lines and responsiveness to customers’ needs.
