A Brief History of Zero Motorcycles

If you've been paying attention to motorcycle industry news, you've probably noticed the upswing in chatter about electric motorcycles. One of the key players in this ever-growing segment is Zero Motorcycles. Since 2006, this brand has been making exciting strides in electric motorcycle technology. Zero Motorcycles: The Early Years

In 2006, a company called Electricross was founded in a garage in California by Neal Saiki. The first electric motorcycle was the Drift, a lightweight, speedy ride.  An aeronautical engineer by trade and a motorcycle lover at heart, Saiki was ahead of his time — GM had discontinued the EV1 electric car years earlier, and there were no other options on the market.

Electricross, which became Zero Motorcycles in 2007, opened a store in Scotts Valley and quickly gained a following among off-road riders. By 2008, the company had added 25 employees and a brand-new production facility.

Zero Becomes Street Legal

In 2009, Zero produced its first street-legal electric motorcycle. The Zero S could drive 50 miles on a single charge at a maximum speed of 60 mph. The ensuing Zero DS added an off-road capability, staying true to the company's DNA. Later that year, the Zero MX gave riders the option of an enhanced suspension for wilder rides. The company expanded to Europe and Australia that year.

Zero Motorcycles Innovation

Since 2010, Zero has continued to innovate. The Zero XU added a removable power pack for easy at-work charging. In 2012, the top range grew to 100 miles. The company's cellbox battery launched in 2013, setting the stage for longer ranges and higher speeds. 

Today, Zero motorcycles can travel at speeds of more than 100 mph; they come with features such as ABS, interior permanent magnet motors, and adjustable suspensions. Some models can ride for up to 223 miles in the city on a single charge.
