Early Days

 

The larger Yamaha Corporation has its roots in 19th century Japan. Founder Torakasu Yamaha began to manufacture pianos and organs in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan in 1887. You can see this legacy in the company’s logo, which is a circle of three intertwined piano-tuning forks. 

 

After decades in this industry, and following the two World Wars, then-company president Genichi Kawakami decided to diversify the company’s manufacturing. He elected to build small engines designed for use in motorbikes.

 

Yamaha Motor Company spun off from its parent corporation in 1955, becoming a leading manufacturer of motorbikes with their two-stroke bikes. By 1968, the company was rolling more powerful and efficient four-stroke motorbikes off their assembly lines.

 

Into the 21st Century

 

Yamaha has seen great success in the 21st century. Yamaha powersports vehicles have been used on the racing circuit, and the WaveRunner® has undergone many improvements to become more powerful and smoother than ever.
